GEM模块可以用于模拟玄武岩与二氧化碳的反应,并在冰岛的Carbonfix项目中得到成功应用

  • Carbfix provides a natural and permanent storage solution by turning CO2 into stone underground in less than 2 years.
  • Basaltic rocks are highly reactive and contain the metals needed for permanently immobilizing CO2 through the formation of carbonate minerals. They are often fractured and porous, providing storage space for the mineralized CO2.
  • Vast quantities of carbon are naturally stored in rocks. Carbfix imitates and accelerates these natural processes, where carbon dioxide is dissolved in water and interacts with reactive rock formations, such as basalts, to form stable minerals providing a permanent and safe carbon sink.

Injection of carbon dioxide into basaltic rocks has several advantages. First, approximately 25 weight percent of basalt is made of calcium, magnesium, and iron oxides. Second, basaltic rocks are far more reactive than sedimentary silicate rocks, meaning that the metals contained in basalts are more readily available to combine with injected CO2 to form carbonate minerals. Third, basaltic rocks are abundant on the Earth´s surface with about 10% of the continents and much of the ocean floor comprised of basalt. These advantages suggest that basalt carbonation could be an important carbon storage solution for the future.
