Most of the currently available technologies for coal gasification use a surface reactor. This paper presents the numerical simulation of underground coal gasification (UCG) using the controlled retraction injection point technique (CRIP) method. The underground coal gasifier is an alternative to surface gasifiers that eliminates the need for mining and can be used in deep, unminable coal seams. The paper includes the study of a 3-dimensional simulation of the UCG process in terms of heat and mass transport. Chemical kinetics in a coal seam during coal combustion were also studied using the CRIP technique.
